HexCrest terrain guide: roads, bridges, forests, rivers

By the HexCrest team · Updated

Short answer: Roads and bridges make you 30% faster, forests slow you by 25% and hide trails from the minimap, and rivers and mountains can't be crossed. Those walls also count when you close a loop, so a trail run along a riverbank needs half the length.

Every HexCrest island mixes grass with roads, forests, rivers and mountains. Each one changes the best route.

Terrain Speed Notes
Grass Normal The default.
Road 30% faster Links points across the island.
Bridge 30% faster Where roads and rivers meet, plus extra crossings.
Forest 25% slower Rival trails inside don’t show on the minimap.
River Can’t cross Counts as a wall when closing loops.
Mountain Can’t cross Counts as a wall when closing loops.

Roads and bridges: speed

Roads cut across the island, and bridges carry them over rivers. Moving 30% faster means less time with your trail exposed, so a loop that follows a road is safer than the same loop over grass. Roads are also the fastest way home when a rival is chasing.

Forests: slow but hidden

Forests slow everyone by a quarter, so a trail through a forest stays exposed for longer. Rival trails inside a forest also don’t show on your minimap, so a rival can be closer than the map suggests. Avoid forests when escaping, and watch the island itself near them.

Rivers and mountains: free walls

You can’t steer across a river (except on a bridge) or over a mountain; you slide along the edge instead. The useful part: when you close a loop, rivers and mountains count as walls. Draw a U against a riverbank and the river closes it. That’s half the trail, and half the risk.

Island twists

Some Daily Islands and Adventure islands lean on one terrain: Forest Kingdom adds forests, River Lands adds rivers and Mountain Pass adds ridges. See the Daily Island for the full list.

Questions people also ask

Can you cross rivers in HexCrest?

Only on bridges. Every river has bridges every few tiles, and roads cross rivers on bridges too. Elsewhere you slide along the bank.

What do forests do in HexCrest?

They slow everyone by 25%, and rival trails inside a forest don't show on your minimap. Your own trail always shows. Look at the island itself, not just the map, when rivals are near a forest.
